While many energy efficiency and sustainability programs focus on new homes, improving existing homes creates additional impact on the environment and energy efficiency. According to the NAHB Department of Survey and Housing Policy Research Economics and Housing Policy, 1.1 million homes were built in 2015 and there were 134 million existing housing units. The additional new homes represent under one percent of the housing stock. Yet approximately 22 million owner-occupied housing units, or 16 percent of the housing stock, were remodeled in 2015. This module explores the challenges and considerations of green remodeling projects and reviews how the ICC/ASHRAE 700-2015 National Green Building Standard™ uniquely approaches these projects.

•Describe the common challenges present in remodeling projects and effective approaches for addressing them.
•Describe the unique compliance options and practices that are included in the ICC/ASHRAE 700-2015 National Green Building Standard™ for remodeling.
•Discuss a balanced approach to achieving green, high performance objectives within the constraints of existing conditions.
•Explain the differences between Whole Building and Functional Area remodeling projects within the NGBS.
