HPBBP 5: Building Science and the Whole House
High performance and green building emphasizes a whole house approach to build homes that are more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient. A whole house approach applies a perspective that goes beyond seeing a home as just a summation of its individual parts. It explains the interaction of all parts of a home, its systems and equipment, its occupants and the structure itself. Building science has a key role because it explains the interactions and drives the health, comfort, sustainability and efficiency of the structure. Lack of knowledge or attention to detail could yield unintended consequences in a home’s operation, indoor environment or durability. This module explores key building science principles: heat transfer, moisture movement, air pressure, and climate zone considerations that influence the application of these principles.
By completing this module, you will be able to:
•Define the key building science principles.
•Explain how building science principles impact structures differently in various climate zones.
•Describe the whole house approach, its foundational concepts and integrated perspective for building design and construction.
•Explain the differences between traditional building assemblies and more recent whole house assemblies and their impact on building performance.
