Judging

Judging is conducted by an expert panel of 55+ industry professionals from across the country representing expertise in development, architecture, universal design and aging-in-place, marketing, interior design, and lifestyle. Judges may designate finalists and winners in any or all categories. Awards may not be given in a category if entries submitted do not meet the criteria below. Judges also have the discretion to expand a category or create a new category. Each entry is judged on its own merits, based on the information provided by the applicant in the official entry.


ELIGIBILITY

• Projects must be completed in the two years prior to the application deadline of Aug. 31, 2020.
• On the Boards projects must be designed on or after Jan. 1, 2019.
• Projects must be completed between Jan. 1, 2018 and Aug. 31, 2020.
• Do not include identifying information in the application materials. Awards are judged anonymously.
Exception: Builder of the Year and Marketing and Lifestyle awards

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CATEGORIES

55+ COMMUNITY (CATEGORY 1-7)

• Exterior Home Design/Curb Appeal (materials, colors, façade design, landscaping, etc.)
• Design Concept
• Community Impact
• Respects local character
• Sales and Leasing Activity
• Site Plans (effective and efficient land use, site plan creativity, etc.)
• Amenities
• Delivers genuine 55+ lifestyle experience
• Financing (Cat 5)
• Building plans (overall use of space and flow, etc. – multifamily affordable projects only) (Cat 5)
• Completeness of application

55+ SINGLE-FAMILY (CATEGORY 8-13)

• Exterior Home Design/Curb Appeal (materials, colors, façade design, landscaping, etc.)
• Interior Design/Interior Architecture
• Design Concept
• Success in the Marketplace
• Home/Model Plan (effective use of space, fits target market needs, etc.)
• Ability to meet client’s needs
• Completeness of application

55+ SPECIALTY DESIGN (CATEGORY 14-23)

Specialty categories focus on the "special" aspect of the category (i.e., green, universal design, welcome centers, health and wellness). Using criteria from categories 1-13 based on the project.

55+ ON THE BOARDS (CATEGORY 30-35)

•Judging criteria will be the same as the category for the built counterpart. Renderings may and can be used in lieu of photos.

55+ COMMUNITY OF THE YEAR

This award recognizes a 55+ community that is well-rounded and demonstrates excellence in innovative design and construction and brings attention to details that signal a superior 55+ community, that benefits its residents and inspires the entire 55+ housing industry as well.

The Gold winners in the 55+ Community Design Awards (categories 1-7) are automatically nominated for the 55+ Community of the Year Award — the NAHB Best of 55+ Housing Awards’ top honor.
